Sharper Edge Team Skating

Sharper Edge Skating School offers a variety of figure skating teams for skaters to participate in throughout the year. Our teams train once a week from September through June, and compete at various local competitions throughout Massachusetts. Sharper Edge has a team for everyone, please let us know if you are interested in joining us!!!

Ensemble

Ensemble:  A team of 3-7 skaters which creates a 3 minute program. This program must tell a story and is judged on the entertainment and performance value of the program. There is no technical score and skaters may use costuming and props to enhance their story line.

Pattern

Pattern:  A Pattern team incorporates figures, freestyle, footwork, and group skating into one event.  Using basic circle concepts, a group of at least 4 skaters "draw" patterns and designs onto the ice.  Skaters work in unison and create an entertaining program that is 4 1/2 minutes in length.

Production

Production:  Skaters of all ages and levels come together for this fun event!  Production teams consist of 8-32 skaters which create a large story out on the ice.  The program varies in length and is judged on entertainment and performance. A technical score is not given and skaters are not restricted by specific rules.  This is a lavish, creative, artistic event which uses costumes and props to illustrate the given story.

Synchronized Skating

Synchronized Skating:  A team of 8-24 skaters is put together to compete programs which vary in length due to level. Synchronized Skating is what a team of skaters perform different elements (block, line, circle, wheel, and intersection) using the same steps at the same time.  This team dresses in the same costume and will wear their hair in the same manner.  Unison is critical in this event.

Team Compulsories

Team Compulsories:  This event consists of 6 or 7 skaters (depending on level) performing a 3 1/2 minute program. Skaters will have a theme for their program and skate together for the majority of the performance.  However, this event is judged on technical maneuvers and each team member must take a turn to perform a required element individually. Once the skater has completed their designated maneuver, they rejoin the team choreography.

Theatre on Ice:  (TOI) is a form of competitive figure skating that is popular in Europe, where it is known as Ballet on Ice.  It combines the grace of figure skating wit the excitement of theater and dance.  Teams consist of between 8 and 24 skaters.  Solo skating is discouraged, but is permitted in limited amounts if it enhances the overall telling of the program's story.  The programs are judged by regular U.S. Figure Skating judges and are evaluated on technical merit and presentation with emphasis on originally, costuming, artistry, musicality, and story line.  Sharper Edge Ice Theatre was formed in 2014 and competes in both USFSA and ISI competitions throughout the year.
